Blueberry Picking and “Day Old Produce”

IMG_2623

A picture of all of the blueberries we picked and the “day old produce” they were selling at $0.50/lb.  We picked ~15 lbs of blueberries!

We took the kids out to Mt. Olympus Farm yesterday to go blueberry picking.  We have enjoyed apple picking and strawberry picking at other farms.  I didn’t find that either of those outside of being a fun family day was really a huge cost savings (the per pound prices were almost the same as the grocery store).  This was our first time blueberry picking and it was not only a fun family afternoon, it was almost half the price to pick my own as it was to buy them in the store!  The blueberries were $2.50/lb at Mt. Olympus(compared to $2 for 8oz at most stores this week) and I “liked” them on facebook for a code that gave me 15% off.  We realized when we got everyone out to the blueberry patch that we left the camera in the car.  Sorry, I don’t have any pictures of dirty blueberry stained faces.  Thank goodness they don’t weigh us before and after to see how many blueberries we ate while picking!

My next project – freezing most of the blueberries so that we can enjoy them all year long!

  1. Careful on freezing blueberries. I did that last year and they don't have the same texture for eating. They are great for frozen drinks & cooking. I personally use them for my turtles because they float when they are frozen. Looks like a lot of pies in your future.

  2. Great haul, yum! I've picked strawberries there a few times but haven't been for blueberries

  3. WWadeII - I am planning on using them for baking - pies, muffins, blueberry coffee cake, and of course smoothies. :)

Alison - I saw on Mt. Olympus' facebook page that they have a few more weeks of picking, but with baby #2 on the way (or a newborn?) I am sure blueberry picking isn't high on your list right now. I hope you are doing well. :)

  4. Where did you find the 15% off code on facebook. I liked them, but couldn't find it. Thanks!

  5. My husband actually found it for me. It was posted on their wall. When I asked him about it for you. He showed it to me and I noticed it was actually posted the weekend before and it said good Friday - Saturday but didn't show the dates. He thought that meant all weekends. When I mentioned the code to her when we were checking out she gave me the discount.

  6. I'm hoping to make some blueberry syrup with some of ours, using this recipe: http://www.simplebites.net/how-to-make-your-own-blueberry-syrup/ If you read down through the comments, they say you can can (waterbath, 15 min. 1/2 pt.) or freeze it, too.

  7. Blueberry syrup sounds yummy and would be a great homemade thing to add to a gift! I already froze all of my berries, so I will have to see if I have to go picking again or if I can use my frozen berries.
