MARTIN’S Top Deals for the Week of October 24th

logo_MARTINS

I was excited to see London Broil for $1.99/lb on the front page of this week’s ad.  I picked up two before Michael was born and made this recipe for Steak and Cheese Hoagies with one of them.  It was really good and really easy.  I decided to add some grilled onions and provolone cheese to make it my own.  I can’t wait to make it again in the next week.

There are also some great deals for Halloween candy this week:

There are four store coupons on the front page of the flyer this week.  The fine print on the coupon says that you need to have the coupon, your BONUSCARD, and spend a minimum of $25 in order to get the special price for the items.  There is a a limit of one, I don’t know if that means per transaction, per day, or per BONUSCARD.  If you meet the criteria there are some good deals.  Here is what you can get:

  • Red Delicious Apples (3 lb) - $1.49 (Additional quantities are $2.49 each)

Richmond Times-Dispatch Sunday Paper for only $1.25

I saw this ad in the copy of Richmond.com (a resident mailer from Richmond Times-Dispatch) we got in the mail on Thursday:

IMG_1470

I don’t know how long they plan to offer this special price, but that has to be close to the cost of a Sunday only subscription.  With all of the money saving coupons inside the paper this is a great deal and an almost 40% savings off of the newsstand price.

Apple Picking – Fall 2010

Last year I decided I was going to learn how to make and can my own applesauce and apple butter.  It turned out so yummy that I decided to try it again this fall and this year make even more.  We went back to Carter’s Mountain a few weeks ago and we had a van-ful.  Of course our family has expanded since last fall, and this year my parents joined in on the fun.  It was really nice to have two extra sets of hands to help us carry the apples and keep up with the kids.

Here are some pictures from our day of apple picking:

Who knew worms could be so cute?

We picked Jonagold, Golden Delicious, and Braeburn apples.  We came home with a little over 100 pounds of apples!  My parents took ~10-15 pounds home.  I actually went to the store a few days later and bought ~10 pounds of Organic Gala & Fuji apples because they didn’t have any of those available for picking.  I also decided to save out some of the organics and make organic applesauce for Michael to eat in a few months when he gets to start on solids.

Here is a picture of the apples that we had leftover after my parent’s took some home:

IMG_1443

Here is a picture of what we made with all of the apples:

IMG_1450

We ended up with 15 quarts of applesauce, 25 pints of applesauce, 5 pint jars of organic applesauce plus some extra that I put in a freezer bag and froze for later, 35 half-pints of apple butter plus a little extra that we put in the fridge to enjoy now, and 38 cups of apples that Steve sliced, and we sprinkled with Fruit Fresh and put in the freezer to pull out for apple crisp or apple pie in the future.  I couldn’t have accomplished all of this without Steve’s help.

I know what you are thinking - why make all of that when I could buy applesauce for about $1 a jar?  I may not have a huge financial savings when you factor in the time and effort involved in picking the apples and making all of the applesauce and apple butter.  We had a really good family day apple picking and the girls enjoyed helping some with making the applesauce.   I like the fact that I know what ingredients are in my applesauce and apple butter.  I may be a little biased, but I can’t help to think that what I made is better than anything you can buy at the store.  I may not have come out ahead financially, but the memories, the taste, and knowing that we made it ourselves – those are priceless.

Busch Gardens Christmas Town Tickets for only $5

christmas_town_logo

The promotional code has been discontinued

I just saw this link from a friend on facebook – if you follow the directions you can get a ticket to Busch Gardens’ Christmas Town for only $5!  They are normally $21.99 for anyone over the age of 3.

You do have to pay for parking to the park with admission to Christmas Town, but if you have a valid season pass the parking is free.

We are Busch Gardens pass holders and went to Christmas Town last year.  The park was decorated beautifully and the few shows we saw were great.  The girls especially enjoyed having a special lunch with Santa.  There were also lots of holiday food and snacks to enjoy at the park – like peppermint hot chocolate.

The dates for Christmas Town are select days between Friday, November 26, 2010 and Friday, December 31, 2010.  Click here for a link to the dates and times they are open.

**Update – When you order your tickets you do have to enter the name(s) of the people you are purchasing the tickets for.  I think this is to eliminate people from buying a large quantity of tickets and then reselling them.

MARTIN’S Top Deals for the Week of October 17th

Martin's_Logo

Inexpensive chicken breast, drumsticks, or thighs, white potatoes and yellow onions – and that is just the first page of this week’s Martin’s ad!

  • Ground Beef (80/20) Value Pack - $1.59/lb (additional packages $1.99/lb)
  • GIANT Brand Peeled Baby Carrots (1 lb) - $0.59 (additional packages $1.49 each)
  • Stouffer’s Red Box Entrees – 5/$9 (additional packages 5/$10)
  • Pepsi 2-Liter - $0.59 (additional quantities $1 each)

I also want to share a comment that Maria left on last week’s post about an unadvertised sale on White House Applesauce:

I was just at Martin's and saw White House applesauce cups on sale, 2 for $3. There is a coupon for .55 off 1 and you don't have to buy 2 to get the price. When that coupon doubles, it makes the applesauce .50. The tag is marked good through 11/16, the coupon expires on the 31. Thought I'd pass this find along!

Thanks Maria for the tip!

I also noticed in Martin’s last week that the Barilla whole grain pasta and piccolini pasta are on sale 10/$10 through 10/31.  There were coupons (they didn’t make it to the Richmond paper) in the 8/29 Smart Source insert for $1/2 – that would make them $0.50 a box.  If you are interested in purchasing some of these coupons off of ebay or from other clipping sites the coupons do expire this Sunday 10/24 so don’t delay.

Here are what I consider to be the top deals this week at MARTIN’S.  Remember what I consider to be a good deal and what you consider to be a good deal may differ.  Please feel free to leave me a comment with any deals that you find.  :)

The Grocery Shopping Challenge

I decided to give myself a challenge.  I got $100 and told myself that that was all of the money I had for groceries for the next two weeks.  This meant that if I found a great sale I had to figure out how to work it into that $100 and not go over.  I was aware of about how much I spend on groceries,  but we have been eating at home more since Michael’s arrival and I wanted to see how much I could get for the $100.  I only allowed myself to use that cash.  I couldn’t use my debit card or credit card.  I did allow myself to “reimburse” that money for household purchases – like the $5 I spent on toilet paper at Martin’s.

I do want to note that I probably spent more at Martin’s than I normally would.  The two weeks that I gave myself the challenge I had received coupons from them for $10 off of a purchase of $50 or more.  I saw the coupon as a way to stockpile on meat and to save 20%.

I didn’t take pictures of my haul from last week.  I only made one trip to Martin’s.  I got groceries for $35.40 including pork chops and a whole eye round roast (~5.25 lb) in addition to produce and other odds and ends.   I didn’t get a chance to use the pork chops before their sell-by-date.  I pulled them out of the refrigerator that morning to freeze them and noticed a foul smell when I cut open the plastic wrap.  I took them back to Martin’s and because of the double your money back guarantee I got $7.94 back.  That gave me $72.54 to buy groceries with the next week.

I did buy a few things that aren’t pictured, but here are the pictures from my big trip to Martin’s Thursday night:

IMG_1290

  • Multi-Grain Cheerios - $1.50
  • (2) Ziploc Freezer Bags - $2.09
  • (4) Coke Fridge Packs - $9 (For Steve to take to work)
  • (6) Campbell’s Tomato Soup - $1.98
  • Tazo Tea - $0.49
  • Bananas - $0.41
  • Red Grapes - $2.13
  • (2) Cucumbers – $1
  • Sweet Onion - $2.01
  • Romaine Lettuce - $1.76
  • Butternut Squash - $2
  • (10) Dole Smoothies – FREE
  • Pork Loin (10.05lb) - $18.89
  • Spare Ribs - $13.18 (Manager’s Special)
  • (8) Nestle Nesquik – FREE
  • Zone Bar - $0.25
  • Luna Bar – FREE
  • Think Thin Bar - $0.75

Shelf Price (before sales, coupons, markdowns, bag credits, or tax): $158.63

Final Price (after sales, coupons, markdowns, and bag credits): $47.29

Total Savings: $111.34 (70%)

As part of my challenge I also had to include tax in my $100 – I paid $2.11 tax at this visit leaving me with $23.14 for a few things at Kroger and if I wanted to get a few more sale items.

Here is a picture of what I picked up at Kroger on Friday night:

  • (3) Quaker Oatmeal - $1.50
  • (4) Maruchan Yakisoba Noodles – FREE
  • Dole Asian Salad Kit- $2.09 (Manager’s Special)
  • (2) Pita Bread - $2
  • Best Life Buttery Spread – FREE
  • (2) Organic Milk  - $5
  • (2) Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom Soup - $1
  • Kroger Banana Peppers - $0.99 (Manager’s Special)
  • (3 dozen)  Kroger Medium Eggs - $1.50

Shelf Price (before sales, coupons, markdowns, bag credits, or tax): $37.39

Final Price (after sales, coupons, markdowns, and bag credits): $14.08

Total Savings: $23.31 (62%)

I paid $0.51 tax at Kroger leaving me with a balance of $8.55.

I spent $2.01 on a loaf of my favorite grilled cheese bread at Martin’s when I returned the pork chops.

I also ran into Martin’s on Saturday and spent $4.94 for some pepperoni and ham from the deli for our pizza night along with 8 more cans of Campbell’s Tomato Soup.

The final amount spent: $98.40

I was proud of myself and I think I bought a good selection of stockpile items (oatmeal, sodas, meat, and soup), produce, and dairy.  In case you are wondering what I am going to do with 10 pounds of pork loin.  I am going to cut off a portion of it for a roast.  I plan to grind the rest of it.  I am going to make and freeze sausage with some it and freeze the rest of it in about 1/2 pound portions to add to ground beef for things such as meatloaf, meatballs, chili, or hamburgers.

Do you use a cash only grocery budget?  How do you budget for things such as unadvertised sales, manager markdowns, or items you want to stockpile?  How do you keep a tally of how much you have in your cart?  Any tips, ideas, or advice are always welcome.  :)

MARTIN’S Top Deals for the week of October 3rd

Wow – is it really October?  I have to say yes,  with  the drop in the temperature, the changing leaves, and that I have had three sick little ones in the past two weeks I have to say it is now officially fall.  Have you also noticed the change in the coupons and the items on sale in the past weeks?  We are now seeing different fruits and vegetables, more pasta, sauces, and soups, along with things like tissues and disinfectants on sale and in the coupon inserts.

Martin’s has put several of the fall items on sale this week, in addition to other things.  I am once again only going to give you what I feel are the top deals this week at Martin’s .  There are other items that are in the sales flyer that have coupons available, but I don’t feel like it is the best deal – or “stockopportunity” as I have seen other bloggers call great deals.  Please also remember that what I think is a good deal and what you think is a good deal may differ.  Please feel free to comment with any deals that I have overlooked.

Feel free to click here to look at the entire sales flyer and to see an exclusion or specifics for the sales items.

If you have questions regarding Martin’s coupon policy click here for details.
