Grocery Shopping for the Week of January 23rd–I saved a total of 72%

I wanted to get back into the swing of posting pictures of my groceries.  I wanted to do it for a few reasons.  The first is to show that I don’t buy everything that I list as a good deal in my weekly top deals post.  I like to show people that you can buy healthy foods and use coupons.  (I realize that not all of my purchases are healthy options.  The Maruchan noodles are not something I buy on a regular basis.  My girls like them and they were free and work out as a quick lunch when I am in a pinch.)  I also wanted to show how I buy multiples of items for stockpile purchases.  If you want more information about building a stockpile check out this post: Establishing a Price Book and Stockpiling.

So, I ended up making three trips to MARTIN’S (two in one day) and a trip to Kroger to get everything pictured.  You may notice that I don’t have any meat in the picture.  I wanted to get the Laura’s Lean Ground Beef on sale at MARTIN’S this week, but they were sold out when I was in the store.  I have a freezer full of meat and didn’t see anything marked down that interested me.  The other thing you may notice is the large amount of protein bars.  Steve and I have signed up for the Monument Avenue 10K and joined one of the training teams with the YMCA.  The protein bars have been great to snack on after we finish one of our training sessions.

Shelf Total (before sales, coupons, and tax): $181.36

I saved $20.44 with my MARTIN’S BONUSCARD and $50.97 with my Kroger Plus Card.  I saved $49.22 with coupons and an additional $9.54 with coupons that the stores doubled.  I also saved $0.20 by remembering to bring my own bags to the store.

How did you do this week?  Feel free to share.  :)

Meal Planning with the MARTIN’S Ad

I want to start a new weekly post with meal ideas to help with your weekly meal plan using items from the weekly MARTIN’S ad.  Because I am planning on posting these on Wednesday or Thursday of each week these are items that will help you for the next week.  (I got hit with a stomach bug this week and it has pushed me back a day.)

I have found that something as simple as taking 15 minutes early in the week to plan out meals for the week and making sure that have the ingredients on hand makes my life so much easier.  The key to menu planning is having some flexibility.  You have to be flexible enough to move things around for nights that you forgot to defrost your meat, got home later than you intended, or your husband surprises you with an unexpected sitter and meal out.

I am going to focus on a few meals and try to give you some links or my own recipes with the majority of the items either coming from the sale ad or items I keep in my stockpile.  The Super Bowl is next week and there are already some deals on party foods if you are hosting a Super Bowl party so I am also including those this week.

Super Bowl Party Menu

Chips & Dip

  • Lay’s Classic Potato Chips are 50% off (they were $1.99/bag at the store near me)
  • Dean’s Dips – $1 or buy 2 and use this coupon and get them for $0.50 each.

Chips & Salsa

  • Lissa shared that she found the Chi-Chi’s Salsa for $1.66 combined with the $0.50/1 coupon in the 12/12 SmartSource makes it only $0.66.
  • Newman’s Own Salsa (16oz) is $2.   Use the $0.50/1 coupon in the 1/23 RedPlum Insert and get it for $1.
  • Grande Tortilla Chips are $2.50.  Buy 2 and use the $1.50/2 coupon SmartSource Insert they will be $1.75 a bag.

Crock-pot Meatballs

  • Mama Lucia’s Italian or Homestyle Meatballs (12oz) – Buy One Get One Free (I saw them for ~$3.98/box)
  • GIANT Chili Sauce – $1
  • Add either Grape Jelly (~16oz) or Jellied Cranberries

Mix the 2 boxes of meatballs, the entire jar of chili sauce, and either the grape jelly or the cranberries together in a crock pot.  Cook them on high for about 3-4 hours or low for 6 hours.  Make sure they are warmed through.

Weeknight Dinners:

Chili

  • Fresh Ground Beef (73% lean) is available in 5lb packages for $4.95
  • 3 lb of Yellow Onions for $2
  • GIANT Canned Tomatoes are $0.59 a can.
  • Sauer’s Chili Seasoning Mix – $0.79

If you don’t have a chili recipe here is a recipe. I haven’t made this one, but it looks like a good basic recipe to get you started.  You should be able to get a can of beans and tomato sauce for less than $1.50.  We like to have a little bit of cheese and sour cream on top of our chili.  They are also on sale this week.  GIANT sour cream is $1.29 (16oz) and you can get the Heluva Good brand cheese for $0.67 by using the $0.55/1 coupon in the 12/12 SmartSource Insert or this $0.50/1 coupon.  If you like it hot add some Tabasco sauce – free after sale and using this $0.50/1 coupon (must register).

This would be great for your Super Bowl Party.  Serve it with the tortilla chips I mentioned earlier or you can make this a meal with baked potatoes and salad.

  • 5lb bag of Russet Potatoes - $2
  • Dole Special Blend Salads or Complete Kits – $2

Slow Cooker Barbeque Sandwiches & French Fries:

I like to pick up a Fresh Whole Shoulder Pork Roast when they are on sale and just stick it in my slow cooker with a bottle of barbeque sauce.  Depending on the barbeque sauce I may add some brown sugar, soy sauce, hot sauce, or whatever I am in the mood for.  I cook it on low for 6-8 hours (varies with size of the roast), then I take it out and chop it.  Pick-up a bag of Ore-Ida French Fries for $2.50 and you have a carry-out meal without paying carry-out prices.  (You could also make you own potato wedges with the russet potatoes on sale.)  This usually makes lots of barbeque, more than we need for even two meals so I routinely freeze the leftovers.   The leftovers make a great quick weekend meal.

Sandra Lee’s Pork Ragu over Penne:

I saw Sandra Lee make this recipe on The Food Network and thought it would be really easy and with the Fresh Whole Pork Shoulder Roast on Sale this week for $0.99/lb it would be really inexpensive.  The diced tomatoes are on sale for $0.59 a can and GIANT pasta is on sale this week for $0.75 a box.  I really wanted to try out her Round 2 Recipe – Lasagna Roll Ups for the rest of the pork.  I love the idea of cooking once and getting two different meals.

Spaghetti & Meatballs:

How can you go wrong with spaghetti & meatballs – if you have a toddler in all white and no bib. :)  I feel guilty making spaghetti and meatballs because it is so easy to pull together, yet it goes over so well with my family.

  • GIANT Pasta – $0.75
  • Newman’s Own Pasta Sauce – $0.89 (after using the $0.50/1 coupon in the 1/23 RedPlum Insert
  • Mama Lucia’s Meatballs (12oz) – Buy One Get One Free ($3.98 at the store near me)
  • Dole Special Blend Salads or Complete Kits – $2
  • New York Texas Garlic Toast – $1.19-$1.39 with the $0.40/1 coupon in the 11/14 SmartSource Insert OR $0.50/1 coupon in the February issue of All You Magazine

Breakfast:

We love breakfast for dinner.

  • Aunt Jemima Pancake Mix – $2
  • Aunt Jemima Syrup – $2.50
  • GIANT Sliced Bacon – $3.33
  • Jones Golden Brown Sausage Links or Patties – Buy One Get One Free
  • Bob Evans Breakfast Sausage Links or Patties – $2 when you use this $0.50/1 coupon
  • Simply Potatoes Buy One Get One Free

A dozen eggs is about $2. You could round out the meal with a yogurt smoothie.  Buy 3 Stonyfield Yogurts for $0.50 with this $0.50/3 coupon (must register) and add in some fresh blueberries $2.50 (6oz) or a mango ($1.25) and whatever else you like.

These are just some ideas that I had.  I love reading recipes and trying out new things in the kitchen so if you have ideas or recipes to share please feel free to pass them on.

Have a great weekend!

~Ann

Additional Deals at MARTIN’S

logo_MARTINS

You may have seen this in this week’s sales ad.  I noticed when I ran into MARTIN’S  quickly the other night that there was a clarification flyer stating that this is not valid on individual cereal cups or discontinued items.

image

I mentioned in my weekly deals post that this has the potential to really be a good deal.  I don’t like to pay more than $1 per box of cereal, so by the time you factor in the $1.50 you save on each box ($6/4 boxes of cereal = $1.50) plus a manufacturer coupon you can easily get a box for $1 or less.  I also read in an on-line forum (but I haven’t tested it myself) that some people were getting a Catalina (a coupon towards a future purchase) for free milk after purchasing the 4 boxes of cereal.  Has anyone done this deal and gotten the Catalina?

Here are some opportunities for matching up coupons with the cereal on sale.  I don’t have prices for the cereal, but hopefully this will help.

Have a great weekend and happy shopping!

The front page of the ad says that if you buy any 4 General Mills Cereals in one visit with your BONUSCARD you get $6 off instantly.  That translates to $1.50 off each box.  When you combine this with coupons that double to $1 you can easily reduce the price of a box of cereal by $2.50.  (Just remember that MARTIN’S only doubles one like coupon per customer per day.)  I personally try to pay $1 or less for a box of cereal, so with this deal that target price is possible.

I am planning on writing & posting a few scenarios for the General Mills deal and for the Proctor & Gamble promotion on the back page on Wednesday.

Click here to view an on-line version of this week’s ad. Click here for information about MARTIN’S coupon policy.

Check out Money Saving Mom for my MARTIN’S top deals in addition to top deals for other grocery stores, drug stores, and discount stores from other deal seekers.

Additional MARTIN’S Promos for the week of January 9th

logo_MARTINS

There are three promotions that I found in this week’s MARTIN’S ad.

One is on the back page of the ad.

image It list numerous Nestle items and states that if you buy $20 in participating products in a single transaction with your BONUSCARD you will get a checkout coupon (aka “a Catalina”) for $7 off your next order.  I was trying to do some research on this because at the very bottom of the ad there is this statement, “$20 must be met after all discounts have been applied”.  I have always assumed that that type of statement means that you still have to have $20 after you use any manufacturer coupons.

I asked the question in a GAINT PA forum and received two different answers.  One person said that they bought several items that came to $20 before coupons and used some manufacturer coupons in addition to a GIANT coupon from scanning her BONUSCARD.  Her subtotal was $17.50 and she received the $7 Catalina.  Another poster shared that her mom bought items that were $20 before coupons and had a subtotal of $16 and she did not receive the $7 Catalina.  She did include that they gave her a gift card for $7.  It looks like this is a YMMV – or Your Mileage May Vary.

If you want to try to get the $7 Catalina and use some coupons here are some match-ups to help you.  (I know that from past promotions the Catalinas don’t print until the end of your transaction, so don’t panic if you don’t see it print before you finish paying.)

  • Tombstone Original 12” Pizza – $3.49
  • Select Lean Pockets or Hot Pockets – $2
  • Select Stouffer’s Lean Cuisine – $2
    • Buy 3 and use the $1/3 coupon in the January Issue of All You Magazine OR use this $1/3 coupon
  • Lean Cuisine Market Creations or Dinners – $2.50
    • Buy 2 and use the $1/2 coupon in the 1/2 SmartSource Insert OR use this $1/2 coupon
  • Juicy Juice 100% Juice 8-Pack (6.75oz boxes) – $2.50
  • Juicy Juice 100% Juice 6-Pack (10oz bottles) – $3
  • Juicy Juice 100% Juice (64oz) – $2.50

If you register at juicyjuice.com there are two coupons available.  If you click the icon I am showing you below you will find a coupon for $2 off any 4 Juicy Juice 64oz, 46oz, or multipacks.  There is also a coupon on that page that is for $1 off a 10oz 6-pack.

image

  • Coffee-mate Flavored Creamer (32 oz) – $3
  • Nestle Nesquik Chocolate Milk (56 oz) – $3
  • Nestle Refrigerated Cookie Dough – $2.50
  • Nestle Raisinets (11oz) Cran Raisinets (5.5oz) or Cherry Raisinets (4oz) – $2.50

Deal Idea:

(assuming that you can get the $7  Catalina with $20 before coupons)

Buy 4 Juicy Juice 8-packs – $10

Buy 4 Nestle Refrigerated Cookie Dough – $10

Use the $2/4 Juicy Juice Coupon

Print 4 of the $1/1 Nestle Coupons (use 2 printers)

Subtotal = $14

Earn a $7 Catalina

Final Price $7

There is a limit of one $7 Catalina per transaction.

The second promotion is on the next to last page of the ad.

image

It says that if you buy $10 worth of Nature’s Promise items and iTunes Gift Cards in one transaction with your BONUSCARD you will save $5 instantly.  The fine print says after coupons, limit one per transaction.  After coupons and savings.  Excludes refrigerated milk.  I am reading it that you have to have $10 worth of Nature’s Promise items and a $10 iTunes gift card.

I try to buy organic produce that is on the dirty dozen list.  I bought one package of Nature’s Promise Celery Hearts last week and it was $3.69.  I also bought a 5 pound bag of Nature’s Promise Carrots for $4.99. In this week’s ad the Nature’s Promise Natural Woven Wheat Crackers are $2 a box.   The Nature’s Promise canned beans have been $1 recently (I don’t know if they still are).  But those are some ideas for how to reach your $10 in Nature’s Promise items and buy items that you can use.  The iTunes gift card can always be used as a gift or a treat for yourself.  :)

The third promotion is also on the next to the last page of the ad.

image

It says that if you buy $15 worth of participating Maybelline, Garnier or Fructis items you will get $5 off your shopping order instantly.  You must use your BONUSCARD and purchase items in one transaction after coupons and savings.  Limit one offer per transaction.  I don’t know what items are the “participating items”, but here are some coupons available to try to maximize your savings.

  • $1/1 Maybelline New York Mascara – 1/9 RedPlum Insert
  • $1/1 Maybelline Color Sensational Lipcolor, Pearls, Lip Liner, Lip Gloss, Or Any Maybelline New York Lip Color – December Issue of All You Magazine
  • $2/1 Maybelline Color Sensational Lipcolor, Pearls, Lip Liner, Lip Gloss, Or Any Maybelline New York Lip Color – 12/5 RedPlum Insert

Feel free to share if any of these deals work for you or if you find any other deals.

MARTIN’S Top Deals for the Week of January 2nd

logo_MARTINS

I was excited to see all of the great meat and produce deals on the front page of the MARTIN’S ad.  I am planning on buying the Whole Eye Round Roast that is on sale this week.  I bought one back in September when they also had it for $1.99/lb and made some really nice lean ground beef with the assistance of my Kitchen-Aid meat grinder attachment.  (I would have taken pictures, but my hands were covered in meat juices.)  We also had a nice roast for dinner one night – it even makes great sandwiches the next day if you have any leftover.

I also wanted to share a comment that sdavis left me on last week’s top deals post:

I printed a $1/$10 meat purchase at the coupon kiosk to use with my whole pork shoulder that was just over $10. So, I was able to save an extra .10/lb.

Has anyone else gotten similar coupons from the coupon kiosk?  Thanks for the reminder sdavis to keep checking the kiosk to see what coupons we can print.
