Stock Your Fridge and Save on Gas this Week at MARTIN’S

***If you are in the Richmond area tune into NBC 12 tonight at 5PM to see me (and my two youngest little ones) on the “More Bang For Your Buck” segment. If you aren’t in Richmond I will try to post the link once it is up.

I was near the John Rolfe MARTIN’S Wednesday morning and had some time before I needed to get to my next stop so I decided to make a lap around the store to look for any unadvertised deals and to check out the meat items in the buy 3 get $0.40/gallon fuelperks!. I started my grocery store laps by scanning my MARTIN’S BONUSCARD at the shopping kiosk and discovered a $1 off a $10 meat purchase coupon available. What a great bonus!

This is what I bought:

IMG_2930_thumb5

I picked up the three smallest ham slices that I could find (the prices were $4.13, $4.21, and $4.35). These are vacuum sealed and the sell by date is November 26.

My pre-tax total was $11.69 after I redeemed my $1 off $10 meat purchase coupon. I also earned an additional $0.40/gallon towards my fuelperks! balance. When I factor in the $8 I will save on gas thanks to fuelperks! my final price is $3.69. (This purchase brought my balance to $3.45 per gallon. I should get 20 gallons for $2.18 the next time I need to fill-up!)

I am also really excited to have the ham slices in my refrigerator. I have a few potential meals already in the works for them. One will be great with our eggs and pancakes for a Saturday morning breakfast. I may dice up one of the ham slices and use it in either soup, quiche, or frittatas. I could also make one of my sister’s favorite meals, warm ham with a brown sugar glaze, macaroni & cheese, baked apples and rolls. There are lots of possibilities.

Have you been taking advantage of the fuleperks! program (either in Richmond or at MARTIN’S/GIANT PA outside of Richmond)? Did you find any other great deals to build up your fuelperks! balance this week? Feel free to ask me any questions about how the Richmond area fuelperks! program works.

Happy Shopping!

Weight Watchers–Donate your Weight Loss

I have mentioned a few times that I am following the Weight Watchers PointsPlus Plan in an effort to get my pre-babies body back.  Weight Watchers right now has a promotion called Lose For Good.  The concept is that Weight Watchers will donate up to 1 million dollars to fight hunger for every pound members lose.  They also encourage meetings members to bring a donation that will be given to local food banks.  The suggested donation is a food item that equals your weight loss for that week so if you lose a pound you can donate a one pound bag of rice or pasta.

I wanted to push myself to hit my next mini goal of losing 35 pounds.  (I still have ~15 pounds to hit my goal.)  I hit that goal and I decided to gather 35 pounds worth of food out of my pantry to donate so that I could have another visual of the weight I have lost.

I took a picture of my 35 pound food donation at Weight Watchers with my phone:

IMG_0268[1]

(It isn’t my best set-up, Michael was “helping”)

I had a total of 10 boxes of cereal, 9 cans of vegetables, 2 cans of tomato sauce, 6 boxes of whole grain pasta, 6 bottles of barbecue sauce, 3 rice mixes, 2 bags of vegetable pasta, and a pound of rice.

I figure that I paid about $10 thanks to sales and coupons for everything I donated.  What a great way to help others and make me realize how far I have come in my weight loss journey.

Produce Box Day!!!!

Check out the great produce I got in my box from Dominion Harvest today!

IMG_2927

  • Long Island Cheese Pumpkin
  • Red Delicious Apples
  • Acorn Squash
  • Green Tomatoes
  • Red Bell Peppers
  • String Beans
  • Bibb Lettuce
  • Mustard Greens
  • White Radishes
  • Parsley

This week’s box is another example of produce that I wouldn’t normally buy because I am either unfamiliar with the item or I wouldn’t have seen it in the grocery store (like white radishes or green tomatoes).  I am really excited to try out these new things, well maybe not the tomatoes unless green tomatoes are really different from red tomatoes.

Do any of you have any recipes for these new to me items?  I love reading recipes so please feel free to send me a link.

MARTIN’S Kraft Foods Buy $25 Get $7 off Instantly

Did you see this on the back page of this week’s MARTIN’S ad?

image

This is a great way to stock-up on some of your favorite Kraft items and save a little extra.  There is some fine print with this deal.  (Isn’t there always?)  You must buy $25 worth of participating Kraft products in one transaction.  The $25 is calculated based on the sale prices (that is what they mean when they say after discounts).  You can only get $7 off in one transaction, if you are planning on buying enough to hit $50 after sale prices break it up so that you get the $7 off of each.

Here are the participating items and any available coupons:

  • Kraft Cool Whip Topping – $1
  • Planters Peanut Butter (28oz)– $2.99
    • $0.75/1 from 8/21 SmartSource
  • Kool-Aid Jammers 10 pack – $1.88
  • Capri-Sun 10 Pack – $2
  • Crystal Light Drink Mix – $2
  • Crystal Light On The Go Sticks – $2
  • MiO Liquid Water Enhancer – $3.79
  • Kraft Singles Individually Wrapped Cheese Slices (10.7-12oz)– $2.50
  • Kraft Deluxe or Homestyle Macaroni & Cheese – $2
  • Jell-O Ready-to-Eat Dessert – $2.50
  • Stove Top Stuffing Mix – $1.50
    • $0.50/1 from 9/11 SmartSource
  • Kraft Velveeta (16oz) – $3.49
  • Kraft Grated Parmesan (8oz) – $3.49

  • Nabisco 100 Calorie Snack Bars – $2.50
  • Kool-Aid Unsweetened Drink Mix – Buy 10 Get 10 Free

  • Nabisco Snack Crackers – $2.69
  • Oscar Mayer Fun Pack Lunchables (6.7-11.7oz) – $2.50
  • Nabisco Favorites Lunch Box Tray Pack – $4.99
  • Nabisco Oreo or Nutter Butter Cookies – $2.99

I am excited about the peanut butter.  I didn’t find any great deals with back to school and my supply is lower than I like to have it.  The price seems a little high, but it is a larger container.

This is the deal scenario that I think I am going to pick-up:

  • (6) Planters Peanut Butter = $17.94
  • (5) Stove Top Stuffing = $7.50
  • Subtotal = $25.44
    • Get $7 off instantly
    • Redeem (6) $0.75/1 Planters Peanut Butter Coupons = (-$4.75) (only the first one will double to $1)
    • Redeem (5) $0.50/1 Stove Top Coupon = (-$3) (only the first one will double to $1)
  • Final Price = $10.69 (a 58% savings!)

The peanut butter will help fill my pantry and I will hold onto the stuffing for a donation to a local food bank – it is a win-win for everyone.

added 9/28/11 – Jessica sent me a note to let me know that the Planters Nut Bars are included in the sale.  I completely overlooked that – Thanks Jessica!  If you use the coupons that go with the Planters Nut Bars it can be a great deal.

Sunday Richmond Times-Dispatch for only $1.25 at Walgreens

I was just flipping through this week’s Richmond.com residential mailer and saw this ad on page 3:

IMG_2923

The standard newsstand price is $2 so I am really excited to buy my additional papers for only $1.25 each!  They offered the same deal last fall and I think it lasted until the holidays.  That price is close to the cost of a Sunday only subscription. With all of the money saving coupons inside the paper this is a great deal and an almost 40% savings off of the newsstand price.

Happy Shopping!

Another great back door delivery!

DSC_8255

Wednesday afternoons are when I get my bi-weekly delivery from Dominion Harvest.  I know that you think that I am a little crazy to get excited about produce, but I can’t get over how much I love it!  One of the things that I really like is that the delivery is challenging us to try food that I normally wouldn’t have bought and it is allowing me to save some fresh vegetables for later use.

I like eggplant, Steve will eat it, and now my kids will eat it– a little.  Eggplant is something that I would buy very infrequently at the store.  Dominion Harvest sends out recipes every week after they deliver the boxes for ideas of ways that you can utilize all of the produce they send you.  I honestly haven’t tried any, but I have enjoyed reading them.  I am hoping to use my eggplant this week to try and make this recipe for Baba Ghannouj

Butternut squash is another thing that I don’t buy on a regular basis for us.  I bought it when I was making baby food, and discovered how much I like it.  I am looking forward to trying out a recipe I made last year from Weight Watchers for oven baked butternut squash fries.  They turned out really great when I made them before and I even saved out the seeds and roasted them (like pumpkin seeds) and enjoyed them as a snack.

I am planning on chopping and freezing some of the onions and green peppers.  It will be great to have them on hand for things like chili and spaghetti sauce. The lettuce will be used for a salad, on sandwiches, or maybe even lettuce wraps.  The cucumbers will also be used in either salad, or sliced for snacking.

I am really excited about the jar – it is fresh local honey!  I read somewhere recently that if you eat local honey it will help with seasonal allergies.  I don’t know if this is true or not, but I am looking forward to using it. The real problem that I have is trying to decide how I am going to use it first.

I have been trying to keep track of what I get and how much these items would cost in the store and without a doubt I feel like the $37 I am paying for a box every two weeks is definitely worth it.  Thanks Dominion Harvest!

Catalina Deal at MARTIN’S, Summer Clearance, and Freebies!

DSC_8246

I ran out real quick late Tuesday night to check out a few deals at MARTIN’S.  One of the deals that I was checking on was a Barilla Whole Grain Pasta catalina that I had read on-line was working at MARTIN’S affiliates.  I didn’t see any shelf tags, but I decided that I would still give it a try and it worked!  Thanks to the deal I bought three boxes of whole grain pasta for $0.33 a box.

Here is the deal:

  • Buy three boxes of Barilla Whole Grain Pasta and earn a catalina for $2 off your next order.  I read on-line that the catalina is running 9/12-9/25/11, but I didn’t get a print out with the information to verify the dates.

Here is how it works out – what makes it even better is that it doesn’t require any coupons!

    • Buy three boxes of Barilla Whole Grain Pasta on sale for $1 each this week
    • Pay $3
    • Earn a catalina at the end of your transaction for $2 off your next order
    • $0.33 each after sale and catalina

I had three of the coupons for $1 off Barilla Pasta and Sauce and combined it with the catalina deal to pay only $4 for 3 boxes of Barilla pasta and 3 jars of Barilla sauce.

I also found some other clearance deals and freebies while I was in the store.

I found three Febreze Noticeables Warmers on the mark down shelf. They were marked down to $1.94 each – I happened to have with me three of the $3/1 Febreze Noticeables Warmer coupons with me and I was able to redeem all of them and get a little bit of a money maker.

The summer merchandise is marked down 75% off – I got the large bottle of bubbles for $0.75 and the other two were $0.25 each.  The goggles were $0.50 each.

The Nexcare bandages (8 count) are in the travel section for $0.99 – combine these with the $0.55/1 coupon from the 6/5 insert for free bandages.

The Balance Bars are $1 each – combine this with the $0.55/1 coupon that was on the front of the 9/11 SmartSource insert and they are also free.  (The coupon says do not double but because the barcode begins with a “5” it will still double.)

I had an internet printable (I think I got it off of facebook a few months ago) that was still valid for $0.50/1 Birdseye Frozen Vegetables.  It gave me a free bag of frozen veggies – something I haven’t snagged in a few months.

My last surprise of the night was the CareOne hand soap.  I had my $1/1 CareOne product coupon from the A Celebration of Savings! Coupon Booklet and was going to get lip balm for my girls, but when I scanned my BONUSCARD at the coupon machine when I walked in the store it gave me a coupon for $0.40 off CareOne handsoap – when I combined that with the $1/1 coupon I got it for free!

I also used my $1/1 Smart Living coupon for the erasers (that were $0.69) and my $1/1 Nature’s Promise milk ($2.99) from the A Celebration of Savings! Coupon Booklet

The total for this trip before sales, coupons, and tax = $54.40

Final Price for this trip after sales, coupons, and before tax = $15.09

Total Savings = $39.31 (72%)

I also earned a $2 off your next order catalina for the Barilla pasta and an additional $0.40/gallon with the purchase of the gloves, Clorox bleach, and Resolve – which is another $8 in savings!

Have you found any great clearance deals or freebies recently?  Please feel free to share.

Happy Shopping!

Q: What are you going to do with 8 pounds of chicken breast? A: Freezer Cooking.

That is the abridged version of a conversation with a neighbor at a neighborhood gathering last Saturday.

I decided to cook both four pound packages of chicken that I picked up last week on sale for $1.99/lb instead of freezing in one pound portions.  I pulled out both of my slow cookers and put four pounds of raw boneless skinless chicken breast in each one.  I added barbecue sauce to one of them to make a batch of chicken barbecue and I added taco seasoning, Ro-tel tomatoes, and some other ingredients to the other one to make a chicken taco or burrito filling.  They both smelled great while they were cooking!

The taco/burrito filling is in the clear dish and the bowl is what I saved out for us for dinner. The chicken barbecue is in the black dish. I placed the bags in these dishes and then filled them with cold water and ice to safely cool them down before placing them in the freezer.

I had  found some bread on the “stale bread” shelf in MARTIN’s on Tuesday and had about one and one-half loaves left.  I had recently seen this post on Money Saving Mom about making homemade uncrustables for the freezer and making croutons out of the leftover crust.  I already had the Pampered Chef gadget and thought that it would be nice to have some ready made sandwiches for Natalie’s lunch.

IMG_2918

I tried making the sandwiches in the center of the bread, but because I wanted to save the crust for croutons I found it easier to just cut the bread first then press them together.

IMG_2919

I wrapped the individual sandwiches in plastic wrap and then placed them all in a gallon sized freezer bag.

DSC_8231

Yum! Butter, olive oil, italian seasonings and bread – what could smell better?!? We had a few more croutons before the picture. I had a few “quality control inspectors” passing through the kitchen when these were finished.

DSC_8233

I also had several onions that I received in my produce box from Dominion Harvest that I wanted to chop up and freeze.  I ended up chopping up three and a half large onions and placing them in snack size bags so they are recipe-size portions.  I later wrapped the individual bags in foil, then placed them in a large storage bag and a freezer bag to keep the entire freezer from smelling like onions.

I really don’t like to chop onions so hopefully having this many onions ready in recipe-sized portions will make fixing dinner a lot easier.

DSC_8234

I didn’t get everything finished that day, I had to go out to a parent’s night at school.  I did finally finish the last item on my agenda when I got a chance to cut up some of the beautiful peppers that I got in my produce box from Dominion Harvest.  I still had half of a large onion so I made portion sized bags of red and green peppers with onions for stir fry or fajitas and I chopped up one bag with assorted peppers and the rest of the onion to use for chili.

Cutting peppers is another chore I don’t like to do and hopefully this will make pulling dinner together easier and faster on busy weeknights.

What do you have stored in your freezer?  What are some ingredients that you keep on hand for quick weeknight meals?  Do you have a favorite fix double, triple, or quadruple and freeze the leftovers recipe?  Please feel free to share.

Happy Cooking & Freezing!

Kotex Money Maker after fuelperks! and Catalina at MARTIN’S

IMG_2914

I just got back from checking out this deal that I posted late last night with my weekly top deals post.  The deal is even better than I thought!

Select Kotex Sanitary Products (excludes U by Kotex) – $3

  • Buy 3 or more Kotex products in one transaction and earn a Catalina for $2.50 off your next purchase
  • Buy 3 and get $0.20/gallon (a 20 gallon max in Richmond)
  • Use the $2/2 pads, $1.50/2 liners, or $1.50/2 Security Tampons coupons from the 8/7 Smartsource insert

I decided to buy 4 packages of the pads because I had $2/2 coupons and I figured that with the fuel savings and coupon it was a better deal to buy a fourth package.  Instead of getting a $2.50 off your next order Catalina (which I was anticipating because I bought more than three packages) I ended up with two $2 off your next order Catalinas.

This deal could be pulled or change at any moment.  I have pictured the three items that printed – two $2 off your next order (with an expiration date 14 days away) and the information Catalina.  It states that from 9/9/11 – 10/2/11 (that’s right it is a few days early) buy two or more and get $2 off or buy three or more and get $2.50 off.

So – how do I figure I got them for free?

The Kotex are part of the buy 3 get $0.20/gallon added to your fuelperks! balance.  The four packages gave me a $0.20/gallon balance which means when I fill up my mini-van and put the remainder of the 20 gallons in my gas can I will have saved $4 on gas.

I also got two Catalina coupons for $4 off my next order – that is $4 to spend on anything I want in the store – more Kotex or milk and bread.

Here is the math:

  • Buy (4) Kotex Pads= $12
  • Redeemed (2) $2/2 Kotex pads coupons = (-$4)
  • Paid $8 (plus tax)
  • Earned $4 in fuelperks!
  • Earned $4 in Catalinas towards my next shopping trip
  • Final price = Free!

I made a second trip out to verify that the Catalina is printing for the liners and tampons also.  I also verified that you can pay with one of the $2 Catalinas from a previous purchase and still get a $2 catalina for every 2 Kotex products you purchase.  If you want to make this deal turn into a moneymaker try these scenarios -

Here is how:

  • Buy (6) Kotex Pads = $18
  • Redeem (3) $2/2 Kotex pads coupons = (-$6)
  • Pay = $12 (plus tax)
  • Earn $0.40/gallon in fuelperks! ($8 in Richmond)
  • Earn $6 in Catalinas towards your next shopping trip
  • Final Price = $2 Money Maker after Gas and Catalinas

Another options:

  • Buy (2) Kotex Pads = $6
  • Buy (2) Kotex Liners = $6
  • Buy (2) Kotex Tampons = $6
  • Redeem (1) $2/2 pads coupon = (-$2)
  • Redeem (1) $1.50/2 liners coupon = (-$1.50)
  • Redeem (1) $1.50/2 tampons coupon = (-1.50)
  • Pay = $13 (plus tax)
  • Earn $0.40/gallon in fuelperks! ($8 in Richmond)
  • Earn $6 in Catalinas towards your next shopping trip
  • Final Price = $1 Money Maker after Gas and Catalinas

  • Buy (6) Kotex Security Tampons = $18
  • Redeem (3) $1.50/2 = (-$4.50)
  • Pay $13.50 (plus tax)
  • Earn $0.40/gallon in fuelperks! ($8 in Richmond)
  • Earn $6 in Catalinas towards your next shopping trip
  • Final Price = $0.50 Money Maker after Gas and Catalinas

One last thing – even if this isn’t the brand you prefer, or you don’t need this product feel free to buy at least one round to give as a donation item (but please don’t shelf clear).  Women’s shelters and even disaster relief organizations can always use these items – or you can just leave them in the bathroom at your church there is always someone who gets caught off guard and needs something.  ;)
